Senior Marine pilot captain V.P. Gupta fell from the The Pilot ladder while boarding the ship on 10th August 2019 at Mumbai inner Anchorage in India. He slipped from the pilot ladder while climbing to board the ship M.T. FUJI Galaxi. After falling he went missing and could not be traced.
Although the cause of the accident is not clear, it is believed that he was probably hit by the bow of the boat in which he had arrived. Capt Gupta was apparently not wearing life jackets and safety helmet.
It is very important to wear proper safety gears during risky duties. An enquiry has been set up by the Port Trust to find the root cause of the accident.
Although prima facie no lapses have been found on the part of the pilot boat and ship. Pilot boarding arrangements have been found visibly in order.
After falling from the pilot ladder Capt V P Gupta could not be traced.
Next day on 11th August 2019 his dead was found. His body was sent for postmortem to hospital.
These types of incident once again highlight the safety measures required for safe pilot boarding arrangements, trained crew for Pilot boat and importance of safety gears to be used by the Pilot.
Boarding the ship in ballast condition is a risky task. Due to the presence of swell and waves this becomes more risky. Extreme care needs to be exercised by the Marine Pilots while boarding the ship.
