Workshop on How to pass MMD Exams. Ministry concerned about low passing rate.

Hon Minister of State for Shipping Sh Mansukh ji has been approached by International Maritime Federation ( IMF) and some other organizations regarding high failing rate in Orals for Class 1 & 2 (Motor) exams resulting in shortage of C/E and 2/E.
Industry also briefed the minister about upswing  noted in shipping and how C/E and 2/E shortage is hurting growth of Indian Seafarers on foreign flag ships.
Hon Minister promised action plan to improve examination system.
Following that, DG Shipping has made a task force on examination system which is expected to submit a report by 20 April 2017. The task force is expected to seek feedback from Students too.
DG Shipping has examination committee and hope they will call students for feedback.
Seafarers can provide feedback from DG Shipping website. Feedback is very important as every feedback is answered and  is analysed. Many changes have come because of feedback only.
Presently on an average it takes 18 months to get Class 4 COC , 21 months for class 2 COC and 12 months to get Class 1 COC. Also pass percentage in Orals is less than 33%.
Efforts at every level are required to increase the passing percentage and reducing time taken in clearing examinations.
On 8th april 2017 a 5 hours workshop was conducted in Mumbai by Mr. Ashish wankhede on how to clear MMD Exams with the name “ Let's clear MEO Exam.”

It was attended by 110  students doing Class 1&2 ( Motor) , 20 External Examiners, 15 Teaching Faculty and 12 Shipping companies Directors
It motivated all of stakeholders to come together and reach at least 80% passing.
Mr. wankhede pointed out that  40% students who fail in written exams, actually fail by 10 marks. A detailed analysis report was displayed. Reading the questions wrong was primary reason.
For Oral examinations , Mr Wankhede shared his view point on how to pass Orals in 1st attempt.
External Examiners gave tips and insight of passing Oral exams.
Failing rate in Orals is the biggest concern. How to bring transparency in examinations was also discussed.

There are plans to carry out these type of seminars and workshops in other cities also, so that maximum number of seafarers can be benefited.
