Director general of Shipping issued a circular no. 134 of 2017 making it mandatory for all Engineer Officers to do HIGH VOLTAGE course before 1 July 2017.
This course needs to be done by Operational Level Engineers / ETO as well as by Management Level Engineer Officers.
Sensing the opportunity to make money all Training Institutes have raised their fee for the course. Now Marine Engineers have to pay approximately 40000 rs to complete this 10 days course.
It seems like this decision has been taken under pressure from Institutes who have invested hell lot of money in creating their infrastructure.
STCW 2010 requires persons working on a ship with more than 1000 Volts MSB to do this course.
Question arises how many ships in the world have 1000V MSB and how many of present Marine Engineers are going to work in such ships.
Why to make it mandatory for all Marine Engineers to do this course which will cost them
Course fee + Travelling + Accommodation + 10 days time
Many such decisions are being taken by DGS which affect Seafarers so badly. They loose their hard earned money as well as precious time.
We would urge every affected Mariner to come together and oppose these type of one sided decisions which affect us so badly.
